Services in Rehabilitation Psychology and Neuropsychology

The Department of Neuropsychology and Rehabilitation Psychology provides a range of services to help patients who are experiencing physical, cognitive, functional, and emotional challenges as a result of any chronic illness, physical illness, injury, or disability. The purpose of these services is to improve the patient's functional living abilities and speed up their recovery from a serious medical condition or specific accident. Depending on the patient's needs, services and treatments are given.

Rehabilitation psychology: What is it?

With the aim of increasing function, reducing disability, and increasing participation in regular roles and responsibilities, a team of psychologists helps the person adjust to chronic, congenital injuries, or illnesses that result in a wide variety of physical, emotional, sensory, neurocognitive, or developmental disabilities.

The rehabilitation psychologists are adept at using their psychological expertise and knowledge on behalf of patients with disabilities and society through clinical practise, research, advocacy, teaching, public education, and formation of social policy.

Neuropsychology: What is it?

Focusing on the nature and traits of abnormal brain behaviour and how it impacts the daily activities of people who are living with such conditions, neuropsychologists study how these conditions affect people's lives. A highly skilled staff person is needed to give diagnosis and therapy because this can be a difficult process.

The neuropsychology team is constantly working to better understand the neurological complexity connected to a variety of diseases and injuries through research and teaching in order to better serve the patients.

  • Neuropsychological Evaluation: A neuropsychological evaluation primarily involves testing cognitive, visuospatial, memory, problem-solving, motor, emotional, academic, and functional abilities. This testing is aided by diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation, and planning for future education or employment.
  • Psychological Evaluation: In order to help with treatment planning, psychologists offer psychological evaluation services to assess variables like personality, mood, and coping mechanisms. The team also offers psychological assessments for pre-surgical evaluation.
  • Supportive psychotherapy or counselling - Throughout psychotherapy, the therapist will assist you in understanding your condition, including your feelings, moods, thoughts, and behaviours. Psychotherapy teaches you how to take charge of your life and deal with difficult circumstances by developing effective coping mechanisms.
  • Behavioral Health Interventions: The psychologist's team works to prevent and treat chronic illnesses in order to enhance health. The use of behavioural measures like relaxation training, instruction in self-management, and cognitive-behavioral methods are supported by this treatment.
